Avoiding the Dentist? Sedation Dentistry Can Help You Get the Care You Need

by | Jan 13, 2026 | Sedation Dentistry, Dental Care, Smile Makeover

Dental Assistants Warm Friendly

If the thought of going to the dentist makes your heart race, you’re not alone. Dental anxiety and phobia are extremely common, affecting millions of adults and children alike. Sedation Dentistry is the answer.

According to the American Dental Association, fear and anxiety are among the leading reasons patients delay or avoid dental care altogether. The Cleveland Clinic reports that as many as 1 in 3 people experience dental anxiety, and a smaller but significant percentage suffer from severe dental phobia.

Unfortunately, avoiding the dentist and care often leads to more complex dental problems — and more stress. For many people, dental anxiety carries more than fear — it comes with guilt, embarrassment, and a sense of being overwhelmed.

Putting off care can feel like a heavy weight, especially when you know treatment is necessary but fear stands in the way. Sedation Dentistry offers more than comfort; it provides relief, reassurance, dignity, and a fresh start, allowing you to move forward confidently without judgment, stress, or lingering shame.

The Good News? Sedation Dentistry makes it easier than ever to receive the treatment you need comfortably and quickly.

How Sedation Dentistry Helps
At our One-Stop Shop dental office, we offer both Oral Conscious Sedation and IV Sedation to help patients feel relaxed and calm during their visit.

Oral Conscious Sedation: Medication is taken before your appointment to reduce anxiety and promote deep relaxation. You’re conscious and still awake, but you will feel relaxed. Some of our patients even snooze off during the procedure!

IV Conscious Sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation and is ideal for patients with significant anxiety, dental phobia, or longer appointments. Many patients remember little to nothing about their procedure.

Check out more information about our Sedation Dentistry Options offered every day in our St. Petersburg dental office. We aim to find the right level of dental sedation for every patient. Dr. Sherberg is DOCS certified in Sedation Dentistry and has an anesthesiologist (MD) administer IV Sedation.

Both methods are safe, effective, and widely supported by leading dental and medical organizations, including the ADA.

Sedation Dentistry Can Help You If:
✔ You have trouble sitting still in the dentist’s chair during dental procedures
✔ You have a strong or debilitating gag reflex
✔ You have years’ worth of dental work that feels overwhelming
✔ You’ve had a painful or traumatic dental experience in the past
✔ You want to complete treatment quickly and efficiently, often in fewer visits

Sedation dentistry allows multiple procedures to be completed in a single appointment, helping you reclaim a healthy mouth easily.
